Maverick is a result of unethical breeding practices. He is a double dilute (also known as a lethal white) Australian Shepherd. This is a direct result of breeding two blue merle Aussies, knowing that at least some of the litter will likely be affected; meaning that they will be born blind or deaf, or, as in Maverick’s case, blind AND deaf. There is absolutely NO reason for this to happen other than unethical breeders looking to include more white colouring in their breeding lines.
As well as being blind and deaf, Maverick has a host of odd behavioural issues, likely neurological in nature (neurological problems are also very often present in double dilute dogs). For example, he doesn’t feel obstacles are…well, obstacles. If he encounters a bookcase, for example, he will change from going forward to trying to climb straight upwards. He will try to go OVER most of the things he encounters, and therefore cannot ever be left alone unattended in the house.
He also has a hard time “stopping”, wherein he will walk and walk and move and move. He rarely stops moving and is always with his nose in the air. We’ve determined it’s not OCD in nature, he just needs to move and go.
As a result of all of the above, even at his young age, he needs to be in a very specialized, very safe, very monitored environment. And in his current foster home, he found just that. He is kept busy to keep his mind active, has a large outdoor space that is safe for him to roam around in as much as he likes where he cannot climb out or harm himself. He is loved and pampered and has fun with his foster family every single day.
